2nd Chance is a charity working for young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET). By providing them with a structured learning, training and working environment, 2nd Chance offers these young men and women secure and supported routes into employment. 2nd Chance offers young people core skills training in English, mathematics and IT, with employability and enterprise skills alongside work experience.
During 2013 2nd Chance was setting up their Southwark school and contacted Levett Consultancy after being recommended by the Local Authority to help with ICT implementation. The new head teacher explained that the new school will need an affordable communication and learning system with hardware.
Levett Consultancy recommended School ina Cloud based upon Google App Edu as this is free for non profit organisation to use and comes with the tools needed to create an effective learning environment. To ensure all students can have access to Google App via school devices, it was recommended to use Google Chromebook simple, cheap devices that are quick and reliable.
With the solution based on using Levett Consultancy School ina Cloud, it was critical that the local infrastructure supported this vision. To compliment School ina Cloud, Levett Consultancy also recommended Wireless ina School as this will allow up to 30 devices in any room to concurrently connect to the school Internet.
Levett Consultancy along it partner VMS Networking Ltd implemented the new cabling across the site. Then D-Link provided the back-end infrastructure based on DGS-1500 series switches and DWS-1000 wireless. By using the DGS-1500 switches this ensured all connected devices e.g. access points and telephones will be powered using ethernet cabling, without the need of putting in costly power outlets. Then adding the DWS-1000 wireless system ensured all the connected access points would be secure and managed. The wireless system also allows for the school connected devices to instantly connect to local systems, but also provides guest access to Internet directly, denying access to the local systems to ensure security.
Once the infrastructure was put in place and tested, Levett Consultancy implemented School ina Cloud. The implementation process included migrating staff email, calendars and contacts from an array of legacy systems. Google Drive was also deployed to staff desktops to ensure all data was kept in one place but accessible from any type of devices e.g. computer, tablets, smart phones, Chromebooks etc…
Levett Consultancy then collected and delivered the Samsung Chromebooks from Samsung warehouse. Once the Chromebooks arrived at 2nd Chance, Levett Consultancy technicians commissioned and deployed within Lapsafe Classbuddy trolleys.
At the end of the project Google Apps empowerment training was then provided to all staff to ensure they get the most out of Google Apps.
2nd Chance opened it doors to in late July for some students and fully become operational in September 2013. All students now have fast access to resources from any devices within any room using Chromebooks. Admin and support staff have a robust communication system that is accessible from any device, ensuring everyone is in constant communication.
